Books

The Sensory Profile – Users manual

Winnie Dunn, The Psychological Corporation, 1999.
The manual for the standardised test developed by the author to measure sensory processing in children for use by registered occupational therapists.  A must for therapist wanting to use sensory profiling with children.

What’s going on in there – how the brain and mind develop in the first five years of life

Lise Elliot, Bantam Books, 1999
A fascinating book about the development of the brain with specific reference to the senses. I was intrigued while reading this.

The out of sync child – recognising and coping with sensory integration dysfucntion

Carol Stock Kranowitz, Perigree, 1998
A must for parents and therapists wanting to understand the sensory puzzles in children with sensory processing disorders.

Sensational Kids – Hope and help for children with sensory processing disorders (SPD)

Lucy Jane Miller, Perigree, 2006
Written by one of the Sensory Integration guru’s of the 21st century and a must for parents and therapists. The SPD Foundation led by Lucy Miller has also done amazing work for recognising Sensory Integration worldwide.

Baby Sense – Understanding your baby’s sensory world – the key to a contented child

MeganFaure and AnnRichardson, Metz Press, 2002
Proudly South African authors delivering this masterpiece and best seller! Coping with a new baby has never been easier with this read.

Toddler Sense – Understanding your toddler’s sensory world – the key to a happy, well-balanced child

Ann Richardson, Metz Press, 2005
A sequel of Baby Sense by Ann Richardson, making senses of those first crazy years in a practical and easy way.

Soon will come the light – A view from inside the autism puzzle

Thomas McKean, Future Horizons, 2001.
One of my personal favourites as I have an extremely soft spot for autism spectrum disorders. Although extreme, if you want to understand what sensory defensiveness really means, this book will give you a level of understanding and insight that is hard to acquire from the “in-sync” sensory spectrum.

A Village of Hope - A family's journey with autism

Esme Brink, March 2011
This is such a practical and easy way to understand what it means to live with the challenges of raising a child on the autism spectrum, while still having to deal with life

and all its challenges.  A very handy book to hand to family or friends to improve understanding.  Can be ordered by mailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
